Our Youngest Fundraisers

Two DeKalb sisters recently donated $201 to Barb Food Mart, a DeKalb food pantry. Lorelei (9) and Phoebe (7) Hanna earned this money by making and selling sparkling holiday ornaments.
They created the ornaments from jar lids, wrapping paper, greeting cards, and ribbons, items that people often discard. Their mother Courtney helped organize the upcycling project and posted about the fundraiser on her Facebook page. The posting brought in orders for 25 ornaments. Several were special orders. The girls got busy.
The upcycled ornaments are one of many art projects the girls have enjoyed during the past year. They also take music lessons on Zoom, Lorelei on piano and Phoebe on violin. They have been doing e-learning from home and look forward to returning in person to Malta Elementary School. Phoebe and Lorelei are the daughters of Jason Hanna and Courtney Hanna-McNamara.
The girls chose to donate to Barb Food Mart because they wanted to do something to help people in need. Barb Food Mart has seen a sharp increase in families in need of additional food during the past year. The pantry serves families with children in the DeKalb School District and is open for drive-through curbside pickup from 4:30 - 6:00 pm on Thursdays.
